Hi Guys,

As you all know, there are a lot of good tools available online for free. What are some of your favorites?

I'll get the ball rolling ...

An open source, free alternative to WinZip.

Audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net
An open source software used for recording & editing audio files.

BrowserShots: http://browsershots.org
Use this site to view how your website look in various browsers.

Color Cop: http://colorcop.net
A multi-purpose color picker - great for web designers and programmers.

FileZilla: http://filezilla-project.org
Open source FTP program for uploading files to your host.

GIMP: http://gimp.org
An open source program used to create & edit - free alternative to Photoshop.

Kompozer: http://kompozer.net
An easy to use WYSIWYG HTML editor.

Open Office: http://openoffice.org
Open source office suite software - word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations ...

Textpad: http://textpad.com
A powerful text editor. I personally like Textpad for editing HTML code.

In time I will list these all here without the screenshots.

And, it's by no means finished but why make you wait?
I have so many bookmarks that when I printed them out
as an HTML file, it made the Yahoo Directory look like a
minisite. Well, not really but you get the point

For now repeat after me...

Tools open on this (secondary) work computer:

NotePad++ http://notepad-plus-plus.org/
Text editor

Xmind http://Xmind.net
mindmap creation tool (I prefer it to freemind http://freemind.sf.net/)

Audacity http://audacity.sf.net/
audio recorder/editor

Jing http://JingProject.com
screen capture program, 5min time limit

Pazera Video Suite http://www.pazera-software.com/products/vcsuite/
video conversion tools

VLC http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
video player, can speed up audios/videos w/o changing the pitch (I go 1.8x up to 4x depending on the speaker)

Gimp http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/
photoshop-esque editor

Pixlr grabber http://pixlr.com/grabber/
firefox/chrome plugin that allows screen captures and Pixlr.com has an online equivalent of photoshop/Gimp

Free Download Manager http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/
allows lots of flexibility on when to download files and can even schedule your big RRW downloads for while you sleep!

Additional firefox plugins:
Adblock Plus - block ads and trackers (like google and facebook)
DownloadHelper.net - grab videos from a number of sites
MeasureIt - draw a ruler on the web page to be able to measure items, great for tweaking out site layouts when used with firebug
Firebug - browse and edit live webpages, great for debugging CSS by adjusting it and seeing what it does w/o having to save-ftp-reload pages
KGen - built on firebug to analyze on-page keyword factors
SEOquake - analyze sites potential off-page search engine placement factors

And last, but certainly not least:
*-> take many of these apps and others along with you on a USB drive
*-> http://PortableApps.com

Hi,

Not sure but I have just downloaded Gimp. It looks all gobbledygook to me, so I am away to look at You Tube to see videos on how to use it.

Oh cool, new tools.

Actually, some of these are not new for me...some I use and some I don't. And some I will now use because I am aware of them.

So it's all good.

Thanks everyone for sharing.

Try doing a Google search with the words gimp and video. It's amazing how many there are. And not just on You Tube.  ;)

Once you get the hang of it, it rocks! Just remember to always save the new image you create with a different name, so you have the original untouched to work with again if you want.
