Hi Brian,
Your progress has been fascinating to follow.  I looked at the materials in "Local Cash Machines" some months ago, and have taken a few half-hearted steps while I've been learning the whole internet marketing thing. There are so many ways to go, there's a definite inherent danger if one is prone to "shiny object syndrome" (as I am.)  And I'm pretty shy by nature, so the whole sales part of getting the spaces sold is just short of terrifying to me.  If I could get that part done through e-mail, I'll be all ears.

Thank you for sharing your incremental successes. It's coming at a good time for me, as I finally feel somewhat comfortable with setting up Wordpress blogs and figuring out what to do once I've got one up and running.

The one question I have is, how did you decide how much you want to charge the business owners to be listed?  It seems to me you're offering quite a bargain compared to what other marketers have said they charge. Of course, it's always what the market will bear, and I may have a skewed perspective because I come from a very expensive part of the world, but I went on a vacation to the UK a few years ago, and nearly had to take a 2nd job to pay for it!  Just kidding, I loved every minute of it. In fact, I felt so at home there, I almost forgot I was actually from the U.S. and was expected to return.  (Oops, a shiny just pulled me off on a tangent again.) Anyway, 1st page of Google is nothing to scoff at, and I'll bet the businesses that get listed on your site get a pretty good bump in their business.

Thanks for keeping us all in the loop.  Especially thank you for explaining your backlinking tactics.  That's still a part of the puzzle I'm trying to master, but every bit of input helps.

Maybe someday I'll have a similar story I can share with you all here at RRW.  I don't know if I've ever encountered a more kind and generous group of people on a forum.  Thank you all.

I'll stop rambling now.

Thank you Teri

Great post!

I can understand your “If I could get that part done through e-mail, I'll be all ears.” I had made two mistakes along the way with this project.

One was I did not check to see if a facebook page was getting updated regularly and so ended up sending a message to a takeaway owner who last updated his page months ago!

Mistake two was, when I picked the business to go after I did so because there was more than 30 of them in the same area, but what I did not check, was to see if their email addresses were available. In my case there was no email addresses to grab from the yellow pages.

So when looking for those 30 business make sure you have an email address too!

How did I decide what to charge?
Well I was not concerned about the cost (as long as I made a profit!) what I wanted was the business so I can build up a portfolio of sites I have done and have that connection with local business people (chances for up-sells!).

I hope you do give it a go Teri, you have nothing to lose (my total cost was £4.15 ($6.58) )

If you need any help, just give me a shout.

Cheers
Brian

Hi Brian -
A little update of my own.  I have been playing around with a local site of my own.  As part of the backlinking strategy, I made a little video on One True Media, and uploaded it to YouTube, then embedded it in the site.  I'll be darned if the video wasn't on page 2 of Google (position 1) by the second day!  The video is not even on the main domain (that's still in the Google basement, but I have plans), but a subdomain of the main one (i.e. city.keywordphrase.com).  I'm going to try to rent out one page per city. In a big state like California, even if there were only one page per city, there are so many cities that I'll need a dedicated server in no time at all!  (Just being optimistic, not necessarily realistic!).

How is your site?  I can't go look at it because it makes me too hungry.

Keep us posted!

Teri

Teri that is fantastic!

Be warned the video will yo yo up & down for a few days before it settles, it might be on page 2 now but after the weekend you will probabley find it on page one!

Can you post a link to the site? Would love to have a look.

Im am sure we are going to see another sale on here ...by you!

Keep up the good work and do not give up!

OK, OK, I know this thread is over a year old but I'd be interested in how Brian, Teri and Julio got on a year down the line.

Care to enlighten us guys?

Dom

I made just under £150 ($244) on this but only had the indian page sold after about 10 months that one dropped out.
Found it very hard to get the others (well maybe I did not try too hard!) I stopped contacting managers after about 6 weeks I really should have kept trying!

The domain was due for renewal & I did not renew it so it is not live anymore. I remember telling someone not to give up yet I did!  :(

Any how it worked but I did not give it a real go  *duh* that is my fault!

So case closed but I hope it gave some people an idea.

Cheers

Thanks for the update Brian - glad to hear that it sort of worked.

Out of the $250 how much, would you say, was profit?

The only money I spent Dom was for the Domain around $10 I already had hosting anyway so yes a good profit for my money but not so good for the time put in to do it.

Okay, I just finished reading from page 1 through 4, it's nice getting a blow-by-blow account of a successful project. It was still a success in my book, as you earned and learned from it.  :wav:
