I lost my laptop yesterday. I was traveling, put it down next to my suitcase, and when I went to pick it up, it was gone. While I feel annoyed and violated, at the same time, I'm VERY grateful to be a member of RRW. Some of the earlier products, I may already have had, but I'll be able to replace them from here again.
One of the things that I learned is that I'm going to burn everything from here to CD at the very least. Of course, getting a zip drive or something like that would make the process easier, I'm sure. But have a backup of your information someplace safe. Just in case...
John

That's a blow..hope it was insured
All of the material in the member's area vault will take up 34 Gb worth of space on your drive. You may want to invest in an external hard drive and then you shouldn't have any problems

Oh man, John. Bummer that you lost your laptop. Bummer still that you had all your Gold member stuff on it! Well, I suppose you had other stuff, too. I agree...either an external hard drive or CDs or some other form of backup is the way to go. Now, if I'd just listen to myself talk I might have something there. Karen

Talking of backups..is there an online site where you store your work? I know there is Google's docs etc..but is there a site where you can 'buy' storage space and keep your records there..so you have access to them regardless of which computer you access the net on?

Hey Folks,
I had a computer custom built a few years ago and had 2 hard drives installed, one is the primary, the other I backup everything to once a week.
I have also used zip drives as well as backingup to cd's in the past.
The problem with zip disks is they only hold 100 megs, cds ony hold 800 megs?
In this day and age I would suggest using memory cards and readers. You just stick in a memory card and plug the reader into a usb port. The cards these days can hold alot of infomation, into the gigs, I believe. They also take up alot less space.
I personnally use a media gear card reader with a card that holds only 128 megs to transfer files from laptop to desktop and vice versa. Since there are a number of different memory cards on the market make sure you get a reader that can read them all or at least the most popular ones.

I used to burn all the products into a CD but it really take up too much time, so nowadays I use a portable hard disk, the thing can store about 250G (the "modern" portable hard disk can store 1TB), so far the total volume of all RRW products should be in the range of slightly less than 35G. And I back up all my files coz I CAN'T SLEEP PEACEFULLY if I don't

And I "second' Mark's suggestion of Mozy. www.mozy.comAlso, Carbonite: www.carbonite.comI have used both...like both, and am currently using Carbonite! Love it, love it. Karen P.S. They both seem to be about the same "fee"-wise.

I as well can vouch for Mozy. As far as I know, many of the major hosting companies use them for backup as well, so it says something for their reputation. I'd also recommend an external hard drive. I'm a bit of a backup nut when it comes to online purchases. On top of that, the best thing to do (in addition to backing up what you can) in my opinion is to keep a simple XLS with the product name, date of purchase, download link, receipt/order ID, username, and customer support contact info. With that information handy you can get most problems sorted out pretty quickly if you lose something.
