You could try Google Docs as a way of saving text

Can you get hold of an external hard drive? They connect using USB cables and I have seen them with disk space of up to 500GB. They act like your 'C' drive but are as easily accessible as your hard drive. I think they are compatible with Macs - I'm a Windows guy myself so I'm not sure on the last thing.

Here are a few places that offer 'free' online storage ( check the small print though)

http://skydrive.live.com/
http://www.mediamax.com/
http://www.divshare.com/

Admittedly - I'm not using any of the sites above so please read their TOS carefully.

Hope that is of help

Cheers

Val

Good suggestions from Val.

You do require another HDD. External usb drive is probably your best option.

Also, as well as the list provided, Amazon has massive storage capabilities you can use.

Search for Amazon S3 in Google. Cost/monthly are reasonable but do some research on security.

We have some excellent videos in the members area vault on how to set up s3amazon storage.

So, ideally, I would suggest you use 2 backups, usb drive and web based.

Good luck

I utilize 2 external USB Western Digital Terabyte HDs - I use one for regular storage for data that I use frequently (RRW files e.g.) or want to have available. The other drive I use as a library with compressed files for storage space saving, as well as keeping a backup of my computer on it. I picked both up from Best Buy while they were on sale about 2 years ago. Cost $300 for both. I have yet to fill up either to the half way point. lol

These are excellent suggestions--and I see several I haven't heard of.

I currently use Carbonite http://www.carbonite.com online backup, which is $4.95/month or $54.95 -- something like that. It has unlimited storage,

I have also used Mozy online backup, http://www.mozy.com. It has several levels of pricing.

And, I have an external hard drive. However, bad me, I forget to use the backup as often as I ought to.

Hi everyone,

I agree for the "stuff" external USB drive is the best solution, at least you are not dependent then from your web contact
and any website then.

Critical point however on this is that if your harddisk "tilts" totally, then you will lose all the stuff and your Windows installation too that cannot be resolved in any reasonable way.

If you use external USB hardisk for all "stuff" meaning downloaded files and softwares from RRW and other sources
that part is safe then, other part not.

I have resolved the situation so that I have cloned time to time my harddisk to another equal harddisk
using Norton Ghost or Acronis harddisk tools softwares.

If my HD tilts totally,it is only needed to change another one in place and start again working.
Without any operation system and software installation hassling with all the additional copying works that normally are needed.

You can find here: http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd
complete tools CD image, you can make bootable CD and use it for to do that cloning work.

Here: http://www.hirensbootcd.net/  you can download that CD image and then you are able to do that bootable tools CD

I use it and it is really a must to every computer repair works.

I hope this helps :-)

Best regards!

Aatos

Hi Aatos,

Thank you for your input re: hard drive full issue.

You've listed a couple resources I've not heard about so I'll go have a look-see.

Hi Karen,
Which one would you recommend over the other as far as about 750GB - Mozy or Carbonite?

Thanks!

Mind if I jump in?...

Don't know about Carbonite, but Mozy would be expensive for that amount of storage, at least on their Pro plan, at $.50/gb. However, I must say I just cancelled a Pro plan after about 6 weeks of trying it on my server and three workstations. Very slow, very limited storage space for the money, and the desktop applications kept timing out and were not in sync with the online "dashboard".

I went back to on-site backups with Super Duper! (on a Mac) doing a modified clone of my drives each night. I say "modified" because it can do an incremental clone, only copying files that changed or were added.

I switched from a backup program like Retrospect to get away from the "big humongous file" methods these program use. I wanted something I could hookup and begin to work from ASAP in case of a primary hard drive failure, and not wait for a restore.

Hard drives are cheap at the moment, so I stocked up. I currently run 3 tb of "work-in-progress" disk space, and 4 tb of backup drive space, and still feel unprotected, so everything goes on duplicate DVDs as projects are completed or at specific calendar points; one set of DVD goes in the safe deposit box at the bank. My business depends on my data; data loss means the loss of business.

Can you tell I've had some catastrophic drive failures in the past?

I would recommend staying away from online backup, and just buying some local drives. Invest in some cloning software, and set it up to run each night. You'll sleep better for it!

Plus, it looks cool having all those drives lined up. And that's what counts, right???

My $.02.

Good post Gary,

I agree 100% with you, I am doing that way  ;D
but I can understand also other people who are using online backups

Using cloning softwares and own system, it is not easy to everyone, it needs deeper knowledge
how computer works. Anyway own system is the best definitely..

Best regards!

Karen

To answer your question, I would recommend Carbonite over Mozy. Carbonite has no GB limits. Flat fee of $4.95/month or $54.95 a year. Unlimited backup capacity

I just now discovered that Carbonite also has a PRO version. Its prices are higher, a bit in line with Mozy PRO.

******************
Mozy has 2GB free. Mozy Home is $4.95/month and $54.95 year.

Mozy PRO (for businesses)
* Desktop Licenses: $3.95 + $0.50/GB per month
* Server Licenses: $6.95 + $0.50/GB per month

````````````````````````````````````````````````
I do know that some of the people I know that use Carbonite has said they sometimes have difficulty getting tech support.
I've only had to use tech support one time--and that was because I moved files from one computer to another--and I wasn't sure how to do it. I was able to do online tech support.
They both seem to have a trial period that you use for testing and to make your own decision.
Aatos and Gary,
I appreciate that you chimed in with your additional information about the advantages to using external backups and whatever else language you are using here.
Would that I understood at least half of what you said--well, okay, I get the drift. But being able to apply all of it is probably a little more than I can manage for now.
I'll definitely keep this information in mind, though, for when I get a bit adventurous and have a bit of time to figure this out. And hope it's before I run into any jams.
Thank you for sharing.
Karen, feel free to ask any questions you may have about setting up cloning for backups. I work on a Mac, but the principle will be the same, it you want to implement it.
