Padre

The list isn't that useless; but it does depend on how 'generic' the website you used to collect the names with was.

If you had a website in the 'money making' niche and collected email addresses then you could market anything to that list, within the 'making money' niche regardless of site connection.

However, if you collected people interested in Bread making, then selling them stuff non bread related would be a bad choice.

Padre,

Being able to transfer a list is a good reason NOT to put "We will never SELL, RENT, etc" on your opt-in form. If you don't have that, it at least gives you options.

I know I said earlier that it was not easy to transfer double opt-ins, but it is possible - not easy, but possible.

I wouldn't use the concerns outlined in this thread as a reason NOT to build a list. You could profit from the list before you even reach the stage of flipping the site.

I think you just have to be aware of all the issues that have been discussed here.

Good point Val, that consideration crossed my mind but it seems like the members of the list would think something was a little suspicious when emails kept coming from the site email and a new set that they didn't opt-in for started coming from a different address (my own).

As Henley says, if the wording of the privacy policy is carefully stated it would be possible to transfer the list.  Then it would be possible to market to the list until sale and have a valuable asset to increase the selling price.

I'm thinking that if you state that the website would never sell the list then you can sell the website (and list) without crossing any lines, as long as the list is not marketed separately.

Bit of a gray area.

when emails kept coming from the site email

If you have the list with Aweber, I think it is possible to change the FROM address. I did it on a test site a couple of years ago while I was developing something, but I've never done it with a live site.

Hi, I know this is an old topic, but I just got an email about it this afternoon, and even though I haven't looked into how profitable this is anymore, if it still is, I'd be interested. I love building sites, but am not too keep on waiting for them to become profitable. This would be right up my alley. I have a question, though. I know how to get a domain, etc, but how do you 'push' it to someone who buys it? It is probably the most basic of all questions, but I have no idea. I know how to point a domain, but that would leave it on my host, or do you sell the host space too?
