What brand of external hard drive do you recommend?
« on: August 29, 2012, 12:55:34 PM »
It's come to the point that I'm almost afraid to use them any more.
I never load them to more than 50% - 70% of capacity so it would seem that there shouldn't be any problems.
They also stay maintained as far as disk cleanup, defrag, etc.

I've tried SimpleTech and lost everything on the 500GB one for now. It's been handled ever so gently, still I'm going to have to replace the case. The smaller one still works like a charm since I bought it a few years ago.

Western Digital: Keeps freezing up.

I'm trying a Toshiba with 3.0 USB even though I don't have any 3.0 USB ports on my computer. I'm looking to upgrade to one that does though.

I should have plenty of RAM at 6GB and a reasonably fast processor. Next one I get though I'm going to go higher along with greater graphics acceleration since all of the latest graphics software requires it.

Well the problem with your 3.0 and if you got only a system with 1.0 it not going to play as smooth as it should. Also being a external drive and if you unplugged it with out disconnecting it from the usb ports in the software that causes problems. There a lot of ifs....

But if these are all external drives you had problems there many things that can be the problem.

err, normally I wouldn't disagree with Mark, but this time I have to jump in.  I bought a LaCie. It looked really pretty, great reviews (unfortunately only their high end stuff has the great reviews I found) but it died in a month. After I had backed up all my files to it. Then I could not return it to the store that I bought it, as they have an agreement that you directly send to them. So I contacted them and got a number, and I mailed it in, on my dime. 6 weeks later, I get a new one.   And I kid you not, 3 weeks later it died. I got on the horn to the customer service and they told me that it must be my fault and what did I do wrong? (He did tell me that it was too bad that I lost all my files again, and that I should really have a back up, which of course was why I bought the damned thing) After I asked politely asked him to pull his head out of his rear end, he agreed that I could return it again. This time I got them to pay for the mailing. I don't want to tell you.  :'( The next one lasted 2 months. Seriously! And at this point I said forget it.
I was so pissed off I actually created a website where I showed pictures of it as a doorstop, as a base for a flower arrangement, as a coaster etc. lol.  (

So, I now have 2 Seagates, 1 at 500 G 1 at 1T.  Been great.

So just do your research, and make sure the store you buy from has a good return policy/repair/guarantee.

I've been using a Freeagent 250GB external hard drive as my RRW download drive - works like a dream, even with all the freezes and crashes I've been having recently.

I tend to keep mine connected if I'll be using it a lot and just leave them alone aside from a power down for cooling when not in use. Of course I use the eject feature when I do disconnect the USB cable.

I find that constant pluggin in and unplugging causes too much wear & tear on the ports as well as the connectors.

I hadn't heard of that brand before. I add it my research list.

...and research I shall!

I've heard good things about Seagate. I'm with you on not disagreeing with Mark but the LaCie didn't have such great reviews at Amazon so I'm reticent to proceed with it on that account as well as your review mlane...

I got a seagate 500g it has been working at least 2 years and no problems. The freeze up could be you have ports may be told to  sleep and when it gose to sleep it doesn't wake up. Kind of like me ... I had problems like that with a couple computers.

I have learned the hard way that you should always backup offline.

And the best product for that is this   Backup my pc

Having been in the IT field for 10+ years discovered that the drives in most off-the-shelf external hard drives could be considered "seconds"
Much better to buy an internal hard drive and a separate external case - to install in the case is only a couple of screws and 2 connectors - power and data.

But if I had to recommend an off-the-shelf ext. drive... it would have to be Seagate

Tried several of both LaCrie and WD with about 85% success rate but Seagate has been rock-solid 98+% (did have one issue with an off-the-shelf 3Tb Seagate - bent - pin on internal connector)

I personally prefer using internal drives and then a universal "dock" rather than a cased drive for backing up clients work, sites, etc.
that way I can use separate small cheap 500 MB drives to back-up each client's stuff, on a single USB without the wear and tear of plug/unplugging the USB port, then write an archive to media monthly.

Sadly discovered over the holidays that I haven't been anywhere near as diligent in backing up work on my own projects, when one of my main host lost a HD on my server and they had no uncorrupted back more recent than 6 months.... but I was only slightly better... my most recent in-house was 4 months old - completely lost about 100% of the work on 25 most recent sites and 4 months worh on about 75 others.... kickin my ass - HARD!

But didn't help to have family point out that most mechanics personal rides are a "piece of crap" - yeah I SHOULD KNOW BETTER!

Wow you all make me feel like I'm a hoarder!  I have several 1.5 TB external hard drives another 4-5 1TB hard drives as well. All of mine are either my passport by Western Digital or Seagates.

That's why I backup offline and it is done automatically. It gets done everyday and if for some reason the computer is off or there is a power failure my online backup gets done as soon as my computer gets turned on.
