Off Topic Forum / Re: Why You Hate Writing
« on: January 01, 2012, 04:20:46 PM »
As a writer, who loves to put pen to paper, I am always sad to hear when other people have not experienced the wonderful benefits that it can have in a person's life.  Writing is my saving grace; it always has been and it always will be.

That being said, writing for personal reasons is much different than the writing needed for website content.  However, I do have a suggestion for you that I've mentioned on a different thread.  Try Dragon Naturally Speaking; it's a software that turns speech into text and I must say, it is quite accurate. Many people that hate to type do well using Dragon.

I read somewhere that 5 minutes of straight talk will produce a 500 word article. While I haven't tested that theory myself (because believe me when I get to rattling, I just keep going), I can tell you that it is quite effcient.  Please note that there are different versions of Dragon.  The standard version is all a person needs to work at their computer.  However, I have the version that also lets me record into a digital recorder--then, I simply hook the recorder up to the computer and Dragon transcribes my speech into a nicely formatted Word documnet.  I was happy to pay three times as much for this version since I spend hours away from home while my 83 year old Mother is having chemo.  Also, I have been known to go to the beach or simply sit in the back yard in the sun and dictate into my recorder.

Now, if you'd like to try text to speech, Windows 7 does have a Speech Recognition program.  Though it is not nearly as accurate (at least it wasn't for me) as Dragon, it is a way for you to test the concept.  (I believe the last couple of versions of Windows had some speech recognition, but I'm not sure.)  Still, I do know that several of the people I've suggested using Dragon Speech Recognition software are absolutely delighted with the results.  Two people I know merely typed using the two finger, 'hunt and peck" system.  They now use Dragon for everything, including searching the Web.  Another woman I know that is stricken by horrible arthritis could type quite proficiently, but now uses Dragon instead of going through the physical pains of typing.  These are just a few examples...

I type pretty fast and have no problem starting a story or article for a site.  Still, Dragon has given me a way of speeding up the process and even multitasking.  Once I hook up the recorder to the computer, I can walk away and do something else while Dragon is transcribing the speech to text.  Again, you don't need to get the version I have (which is about 3 times more than the Standard) to enjoy the benefits of the program.  However, you are likely to be amazed (once you get proficient at it) at how easily you can write the articles you need.

By-the-way,  I've invested in various article spinners that were an absolute drag for me to use.  I could actually rewrite and retype a whole article faster than if I used the spinner to change it.  Using Dragon, I can open any article, read a paragraph or sentence, then verbally rewrite it very quickly and of course, the blank file that I have open fills up very quickly.

Lastly, may I say: don't sell yourself short.  Many people who "think" they can't write, really can.  The problem lies in the typing; having to type out the thoughts.  I hope this helps you are someone else.  Brainstorming

I hate writing, but you have given the solution through this software http://www.nuance.com/for-individuals/, I have heard about speech to text software  before ,but I have seen anybody using it.
