Backlink Basics

So, what exactly are backlinks ... and why are they so important? Well, backlink building is the process of getting links to your webpage(s)  on someone else's webpage. If done correctly, link building allows you to drive tremendous amounts of traffic to your site as well as lets your site rank high in the organic search results.

There are four main things to consider when building links—quantity, quality, relevance, and anchor text.

Quantity –
It's all about getting your links out and having them appear in as many sites/pages as possible. The more, the better of course. This, however, should be done with caution so as not to get one's self branded as a “link spammer”.

Quality –
One should not just go out and drop his/her link on each and every one of the sites/pages he/she finds. Serious consideration should be given to a target site's reputation. Is the site/page a trusted site? Is it considered an authority in the subject matter? A good indicator of this is the site's Page Rank (PR). Another one is whether or not it has other reputable sites linking to it.

Relevance –
This goes hand in hand with “quality”. Is the link relevant to the page/site it is placed on? Is it helpful/useful to the visitors of the site?

Anchor Text –
Using “click here” as an anchor text won't help you as much as “click here for low-priced laptops” would.

Find the Right Sites for Your Links

Run searches for your target keywords on the major search engines and take note of the pages/sites that appear in the top results. This lets you focus in on the "good" sites which are most likely among the most visited sites based on your target keywords. This should allow you to piggy-back on their popularity.

Contact the Webmasters/site owners of your targeted sites through email, fax, or phone and ask them if they would be willing to link to your site. Phoning them is the best way to go about this since this proves to them instantly that a real person is making the request and not an automated emailing/messaging system. But if a phone number cannot be obtained, emailing your request/invitation may well be your best and only choice.

When sending your request through email, make sure that your mail is well-written and personalized to distinguish it from all the spam they receive everyday.

You couldn't and shouldn't expect all of them to respond positively to your invitation/request, however, particularly those that are extremely competitive with you. But there will surely be those who will be more than willing to link to you, especially if your site contains original and valuable content.

So, what to do with sites/people who are very competitive with you?  Admittedly, your chances of getting your link on a competitor's site ranges from slim to nil. But you can still put them into good use.

Visit your competitors' sites and take note of the sites that they are linking to, as well as the sites that are linking to them, and get in touch with those instead. You can also do the same with the sites that have responded positively to your request.

If you find sites that have already linked to your pages, you can ask the sites' Webmaster if they'd also be interested in linking to the other (relevant) pages on your site.

Before Sending Out Your Request

So, you've already got a list of people/sites to send your request to... but before you go on sending out your request, there are a few things you can do in advance which can increase your chances of getting a positive response.

Put their link on your site first -
By doing so, you are basically turning the table around and asking them to return the favor to you. But, DO NOT make it appear/sound that way. Do not say something like "Hey, I've put your link on my site, please put mine on yours." Be courteous and polite in making your invitation/request while emphasizing that you have already put up their links on your site. Show them where they can find their link on your site by providing them with the page's URL. Also, mention that you are willing to remove their link from your site should they desire it (for any reason). Should they turn down your request, thank them then ask them if they'd allow you to keep their links on your site. What do you know, they might just change their mind about linking to you.

Provide the HTML code for your link along with your invitation/request -
Remember, you're asking someone a favor, so make it less of a chore for them to grant you that favor. Providing your link's code will allow them to simply cut and paste your link onto their page.

Make sure that the sites you're targeting have a links page or a portion dedicated to links -

Sites that do not have a links page are most likely not going to grant you your request since they have no place to put your links on in the first place.

Provide them with as much information as you can to enable them to easily link to you -
For example, if they have a big site, tell them the specific page/section of their site where your link would fit in.

The Request

When making your request, make sure that you highlight what your site is all about, what it has to offer, how it relates to their site, and why they should link to it. Indicate also the exact URL of their page where you think your link will be most beneficial. Let them know that you have visited their site and have studied it well for your link's placement.

Then, provide them the HTML code for your link. This should allow them to simply cut and paste your link into their page. Providing the HTML code will also give you some control over your link's placement and lets you include keywords in your link text.

Be very careful in writing your request. Make sure it's well written and that it contains all the necessary information for the recipient to carry out your request should they decide to grant it. And since you're asking the favor (forget that it's going to be a mutually beneficial favor once its granted), be polite and respectful in your letter.

Below is a sample request letter by Eric Ward. the letter is for a non-reciprocal link request which had resulted to an actual link placement. To use the letter for a reciprocal link request, simply add a line or two that mentions where on your site their link can be found.

Whether they grant your request or not, thank them all just the same. For those who turn down your request, ask if they'd allow you to put their link on your site, it just might make them change their minds.

For those who don't respond to your request, send them your request again (just once more). If you still don't receive any response from them, move on.

A Link Building Strategy

Step 1 –
Build a content rich site, focusing on a specific subject.

Step 2 –
Contact other sites that have the same topic/scope as yours and ask for a reciprocal link. Remember, put their link on your site first before you do this.

Step 3 –
Get your site listed on the major and specialty search engines, as well as on online directories. Always choose the most appropriate category whenever you're given the option to do so.

Step 4 – Build another content-rich site (located on a different IP address) and cross-link it with the first one.

Another Link Building Strategy

Step 1 –
Create a links/resources page on your site and fill it with at least 50 sites that are related to yours or your niche (avoid ones that are in competition with you).  Scout for sites by doing searches on search engines using your keywords. (Note: Pick out only the first few top results.)  Narrow down your list of sites by picking out the ones with high page rank, you can use the Google Toolbar or SEO Book's SEO Tools for this.

Step 2 –
Find out and list down the sites that are linking to those in your list. Do the same for your competitor's sites. Look for quality content and non-competitiveness. If they pass those criterion, include them in your links/resources page. Also, take note of the webmaster's email address.

Step 3 –
Get in touch with the Webmasters of the sites you have on your final list and request for a link.

Get Something That Your Competitors Can't

Both you and your competitor may be offering the same products and services, and you're probably both employing the same business models, but that doesn't mean you have to be the same in all aspects of your business.

Considering that most directories are "free-for-all" as far as getting listed is concerned, directory submission is really more of a game of chance rather than a strategic move. Or, is it?

What if I tell you that there's actually something you can do that will give you an edge over your competitors?

Think of something that makes you and/or your business different from your competitors, think of something that sets you apart. Have you come up with anything yet? If you have, then good, you're about to learn how to use it to your advantage... to get links that your competitors cannot.

If you're among those who have made a commitment to do something for the good of the planet and its inhabitants, you can go to Ethical Duck and get your site listed there. Ethical Duck (http://ethicalduck.co.uk/) calls itself a “Directory of Ethical Products and Services” which lists websites that are considered "in some way are of a positive value to humans, the environment, the planet." Considering that your competitors have not yet gone “green”, you've just gotten one link that they will not be able to get.

It's not only Ethical Duck, mind you. Any quality directory that editorially discriminates on your niche/location and other factors lets you do exactly that, that is to give you something that your competitors may not be able to get.

Another thing that can get you links that your competitors may not be able to is by producing great content and doing it better than your competitors.

Yet another thing is by buying a domain that matches your keywords/phrases. Unfortunately, this one comes down to who has a better budget and moves faster. If you have both then good for you.

Getting People To Link To You Even Without Asking Them To


  -   Give people reasons to link to you.

  -   Provide original valuable content and useful resources on your site.

  -   Create useful/insightful lists. “Top 10 whatever”, “10 easy tips to achieving whatever”, those types of lists. People love them and many can't resist linking to them.

  -   Develop authority in your chosen niche/subject.

  -   Provide a privacy policy and “about” section on your site to make it look trustworthy.

  -   Make your content easily understood by most people. Minimize grammatical and spelling errors while you're at it.

  -   Buy relevant traffic through pay-per-click (PPC) campaigns or through intermediary sites like buysellads.com. You might just get some visitors who will link to you at the end of the day.

  -   Submit articles to article directories such as EzineArticles, GoArticles, and iSnare. Include your link in your signature.

  -   Submit articles to industry news sites. Include your link in your signature.

  -   Find out the hottest topics of the moment and post original articles on it on your site.

  -   Make a compelling and newsworthy press release and email it to journalists and bloggers, as well as press release sites like PRWeb and PRLeap.

  -   Keep track of those who pick up your articles and press releases and offer them exclusive content.

  -   Trade articles with other webmasters/sites.

  -   Ask people to provide feedback on your articles/news and to reference to it if they find the information useful.

  -   Do surveys and studies that make people feel important, you'd be surprised by the amount of links you'll get.

  -   Submit your site to online directories which offer free submissions such as DMOZ.

  -   Submit your site to high quality paid directories.

  -   Get people to tag your site on Digg, Delicious, and other social bookmarking sites.

  -   Depending on your offerings, Craigslist can be a cheap/free classified service.

  -   Post questions or answers on Yahoo Answers and Google Groups and provide links to relevant resources.

  -   Create a topical Squidoo page and link to expert documents and useful tools in your field. Also include a link to your site.

  -   Always remember to include your site's link in your signature files.

More Link Building Tips

  -   Start a blog. Fill it up with valuable content and link to other blogs from it. To get people's attention, leave useful, insightful, and relevant comments on other people's blog. This may eventually lead other bloggers/people to start reading your blog and/or linking to it. Also make sure to  list it in a few of the best blog directories.

  -   If you're a respected source of information or expertise in the industry, get your materials online and use them to attract and obtain links to your site.

  -   If you're buying your products from a number of sources (particularly those who have web sites), try to get your sources to link to you. One way to do this is by offering them a genuine testimonial or an end-user feedback (with your link in it, of course).

  -   If you have higher profit margins than your competitors, give away some free stuff.

  -   If you're requesting links from bloggers and site owners, give them one of your cheaper items along with your link request. This could significantly increase your chance of receiving a positive response.

  -   If you have great salespeople, treat them out to lunch, and teach them about SEO and link building. These people have what it takes to call people up and get the response they (or, in this case, YOU) want.

  -   If you have lots of staff who are not fully occupied, have them do some of the things you want done which you don't have the time for.  Have them email the webmaster of every rambling society in the country or find out the top 100 Dugg pages in your niche.

  -   If your site or products have won awards, post all the links related to your award(s) on your site.

  -   If you have a PR team, no matter if they're only good at getting you in the offline press, challenge them to get you into some large online-outlets. Remember, the reason why you got them in the first place is because they are great at getting you talked about. What do you know, they might just do as good online.

  -   Focus on real traffic/people. Build links for them and not for search engines. If you keep people coming to your site, the search engines will surely take notice of that.

  -   Use a combination of hub and authority to factor link popularity into your site's ranking algorithm. Simply put, a hub is a site with many outgoing links, while an authority is a site with many incoming links.

  -   Create a list of experts/gurus in your chosen niche/field on your site. If you can find a way to make your project look somewhat official, or if you can impress those experts/gurus well enough, they might end up linking to your site.

Be Creative and Stay Visible

  -   A great way to legitimately build link popularity for your sites is to build a stand alone directory or search engine. You can find programs for this at The CGI Resource Index and the PHP Resource Index. After you've created one, add to it your own sites, your affiliate sites, your sites that are affiliates for others, etc. You can also create a stand-alone themed search engine and put on it a link to your own site.

  -   Another way is by offering "awards" in the form of a .GIF image that links back to your site. If you've developed a reputation of being an authority on a subject or niche, people will perceive a benefit from the awards you offer (e.g., he/she gets to tell everybody that your site recognizes his site as a quality site) and this will encourage them to place your award on their site. When giving awards, just like in sending links requests, always make it a point to provide the awardees the code for the award to make it easy for the awardees to put the award on their site.

  -   Still on awards, if you don't have what it takes to be the giver of awards, strive to become the awardee and submit your site to as many awards sites on the Web as you can and as appropriate.

  -   Instead of joining a banner exchange program, start one of your own. The basic concept behind this kind of service is that people will sign up with your site agreeing that they will add special links to your site and allowing you to display banner ads on their pages. In exchange, you agree to display their banners on your site and on all other sites within your banner exchange network.

  -   Never say no to an interview, especially for an article on your related field. It is very likely that, in introducing you, interviewers/writers will list your qualifications with a link back to your site. This will add visibility and credibility to you, your site, and your online business. Likewise, if you've been asked by an established and respected writer to contribute to an article he/she is working on, ALWAYS say YES. This can get you published in a lot of places that you otherwise could not.

  -   Look for good quality sites that offer "free" Web space, particularly those that are indexed by search engines, and create a small site (about 3 to 5 pages) on them with the same subject as your own site. Link that small site back to your main site and submit your small site to the search engines for indexing. This should get you some creadit for link relevance.

  -   If you offer contests or sweepstakes on your site, you shouldn't have much of a problem in getting free links from the numerous contest and sweepstakes directories on the web.

  -   Give discounts or any kind of special offer to anyone who agrees to post an image (perhaps a .GIF that links to your site) on their site. Also, give discounts/special offers to those who go through that link. This will surely increase your link's popularity.

  -   If you're regularly giving away free stuff on your site, try getting your site listed on sites/dirctories that list sites that give stuff away like The Free Site.

  -   If you have a members-only site, offer site owners (most especially those who might have great interests on your site or its content) free membership in exchange for a link to your site. If you have a discussion board or forum, invite related sites to link to it.

  -   Create/host a "Top Site" which ranks sites based on the amount of incoming traffic they send. Top Site programs can be found on and downloaded from The PHP Resource Index and the CGI Resource Index.

  -   Include a provision in your contracts with your business partners (resellers, partners, subcontractors, and vendors) that requires them to link to your site. Additionally, also indicate that your link must be placed on a page that is accessible to search engine crawlers. Note that most search engines index only content in the top two levels of a site.

  -   If you have bought a product online, or bought a product of someone who has a web site, write them a testimonial (focus on the positive points), include your web site's URL in it, and email the owner of the web site and tell him/her that you would be happy to let him/her use your testimonial on his/her site.

  -   If you have some newsworthy thing going on at your company/business--landing a big new contract maybe, or your engagement/particpation at a prestigious conference, or launching of a new product--draft a brief press release and send it to all relevant newspapers, to the attention of the Business Editor. You can find the contact information of the newspapers in your region and/or industry at Gebbie Press.

  -   Write letters to newspaper editors, maybe to comment on an article or something, just be careful not to say anything nasty or controversial. Since most newspapers nowadays are mirrored online, one of your letters mught just end up on their site.

  -   You could provide special offers to members of professional organizations, such as your local Chamber of Commerce, and try to get your site's link up on their site.

  -   Contact your local radio and television stations and offer your expertise to them. You might just be able to get your link on their programs as well as on their website.

  -   Put your URL on your stationeries, business cards, offline advertising materials/campaigns, invoices, T-shirts, promotional items, and whatever else you can think of.

  -   Try getting your link on the web sites of colleges and universities. Some colleges/universities may have services or courses that relate to your business' service. If you offer to do something free for them, perhaps a seminar or giving away free gifts to students, you may be able to get your link on that university's site. One thing that Google and other search engines love is old domain names, especially those that indicate some kind of charitable or educational status. If you can get a link from that kind of a domain name, your site will have a very good chance at ranking well in the SERPs.

Finding the Right Directories


Web directories are search engines of sorts which are operated and maintained by humans. On the contrary, the more popular variety of search engines are crawler-/bot-based and mostly operate without human intervention.

Web directories specialize in linking to and categorizing web sites and, as such, do not display lists of web pages based on keywords like search engines do. Instead, they list web sites by category and subcategory. Furthermore, categorization of sites is usually based on the entire site and not on individual pages or set of keywords.

There's an abundance of Web directories online—there are general directories and there are niche directories. So how do you choose which one to submit to?

Before you go on submitting your site to directories, the most important thing to keep in mind is to STAY AWAY from “bad neighborhoods” and “bad directories”. These are IPs/domains that have been penalized or given low PageRanks by Google.  If your site is connected to these directories, Google will assume your website link is part of the “bad neighborhoods”.

Anyway, searching for directories is quite easy... just head on to one of the major search engines and do a search using the following operators:

"keyword phrase" + "directory" + "add url"
or
"keyword phrase" + "add site"

All you have to do next is to pick out those that appear at the top of the search results. Though, you may want to investigate a directory first before submitting to it just to make sure that it's right for you and your site.

Some General Directories Where You Can Submit Your Site To

We've already mentioned Google, Bing, and Yahoo earlier. Here are a few other directories where you can submit your site to.

Business.com (http://www.Business.com/) -

Submitting your site on Business.com is pretty simple:
- First, choose the best category for your site. 
- Choose the best sub-category for your site.
- Click on the List Your Business Here button.
- Fill out the forms presented to you.
- Note that Business.com is a paid-for-inclusion directory. It charges a recurring annual fee of $299 to maintain a site's inclusion in the listing.

Best of the Web Directory (http://botw.org/) -

To get your site included on BOTW, all you have to do is:

- Click on the Submit Site link located near the top right corner of the page.
- Click on the Get Started Now! Button.
- Read and understand the site's Terms of Service and choose a payment scheme that you think is best for you.
- At the bottom of the page, click on the tick box to signify that you understood and agree to all the site's terms (make sure that you do as this is legally binding), and click on the Continue button.
- Then, fill out the form(s) that you'll be presented with. Have your credit card ready, by the way, as this is a paid-for-inclusion service.

DMOZ (http://www.dmoz.org/) -

- Choose the best category for your site from the list.
- Drill down the subcategories in your chosen category until you see the Suggest URL link at the top of the page.
- Click on the Suggest URL link.
- Enter your site's URL (homepage) in the Site URL box.
- Enter the title of your site in the Title of Site box.
- Enter the description of your site in the Site Description box.
- Enter your email address in the box provided.
- In the box provided, enter the characters shown under User Verification.
- Click on the Submit button at the bottom of the page/form when you're done.

Google Local Business Center (http://www.google.com/local/add) -

You need to have a Google Account to be able to use this one.  If you already have one, go to http://www.google.com/local/add

- Sign in to your account.
- Click on the Add new business button.
- Fill out the form(s) that you're presented with.

In A Hurry?

Building links with limited time can be a daunting task. When you're in this situation, you will be able to gain more if you focus on getting the attention of people and sites whose credibility can rub off on to your business. Journalists, bloggers, industry experts, all these people can keep your business in the public eye. On the other hand, industry authorities such as associations can boost your site's ranking. Following are some things you can do that will allow you to build links when you're strapped on time.

If you have companies participating (in any way) on your site, let them know that you are showcasing them. You can do this by creating marketing collateral that highlights how they are benefited from participating on your site and send it to each and everyone of your partner companies. Make sure to include a "link to us" code in there and encourage them to link to your site by offering an incentive to do so. By the way, always ask for permission to use your partner companies'  brand names and/or logos on your site and in your advertising to keep yourself from getting involved in any trademark issues.

Find out if any of your partner companies sends newsletters to its customers. Offer link embedded content and/or offer to purchase the mailing lists of those that do and use them for your own promotional mailing.

Submit informative articles (related to your niche) to article directories such as  eZine Articles.com, Go Articles, and Article Alley. Submitting articles to article directories not only gets you links but it can also get you traffic if your article gets featured on a big site or E-zine.

Develop a list of media and blogger contacts who write about your niche or the sort of products and/or services you are offering. Get in touch with everyone in your list and introduce them to your site. At the same time, invite them to become a resident expert on your site. Tell them that you'll feature them on your site in exchange for their expert views on whatever it is that you're trying to get across. Once someone accepts, issue a press release to announce that person's involvement on your site.  Make sure to optimize your press release for industry keywords and (of course) the name of the journalist or blogger.

Whenever applicable, create a Flickr stream and fill it with images of your products. If you're selling other people/companies' products and you're thinking of using their product images, make sure to ask for their permission first before proceeding. In connection with this,  Flickr allows links to be included in the description of the images. Anybody who sees your Flickr stream and gets curious enough to visit your Flickr album will be able to see and click on your link.

Create a Facebook page for your site and encourage your partners to join in it. Update regularly through Twitter with bits of useful information.

Run keyword and brand (your brand) searches on Twitter and befriend and engage with people who have tweeted about your brand, products/services, and niche. Create special offers for them in exchange for link placement. Also, use keywords in Twitter bio.

Invest in a tool that will let you automatically tweet useful information round the clock. Occasionally, tweet to ask for link placement.

Write content for all your offers (products and/or services) and add it to a resource center on your site. Issue a press release about the feature on your site and send it out to all your media and blogger contacts. Include linking information in both your press release and in your resource center pages.

Join and participate in industry associations that correspond to what you do or sell, including benchmarking associations. Create detailed, graphic-rich reports from your statistics and customer feedback and offer them to the associations you've joined. Tell them how they can use or link to your report(s) in their own articles, blogs, and newsletters.

Make a text, audio, and video business pitch and send them to industry journalists.

So You've Moved...

If you've moved your site to a different URL which necessitates you to ask the sites that have already linked to you to update your links, write them and courteously ask them to do so. And when you do, always make sure to provide them with all the necessary information to carry out the change without much of a hassle. For example, indicate your old site's name and URL. Also, tell them where on their site your link is located. As mentioned earlier, they are doing you a favor, so be kind enough to make the change less of a chore for them to do.

What NOT to Do


  -  Doing one or several of these can get your site banned/penalized from the major search engines.

  -  Submitting your site to paid directories.

  -  Posting only whenever or wherever you're allowed to include links in your messages.

  -  Repeatedly dropping your links in forums either by posting your link as part of your messages or by including your link in your signature.

  -  Posting on old/outdated forum threads just to drop links to your semi-related website.

  -  Signing up in forums just to do link spamming.

  -  Joining various forums and saying/asking the exact same thing in all the forums on the same day.

  -  Asking a question on a forum and using a different account (on the same IP address) to answer your own question.

  -  Signing your blog comments with spammy keywords instead of your name.

  -  Marketing your own site in all your blog comments without contributing any useful/helpful/relevant information.

  -  Posting the exact same comment on all the blogs that you come across.

  -  Using automated bots to leave comments on your target sites/blogs.

  -  Sending out link exchange requests which focus on Page Rank instead of the potential benefits that the link exchange might lead to.

  -  Sending out mechanically-written/composed requests that appear like they had been automatically generated.

  -  Going to webmaster conferences just to personally advertise your site and talk people into linking to your site.

  -  Sending webmasters alerts every time you post something new on your site.

  -  Sending a webmaster an email everyday asking him/her to link to your site.

  -  Sending references to your site to the same webmaster using various email accounts.

  -  Offering webmasters money to persuade them to link to you.

  -  Stealing content from other people, stripping out all attributions from it, and using/posting it as your own.

  -  Participating in link popularity farms

  -  Participating in programs that send out emails soliciting people to swap links.

  -  Getting low-integrity web sites to link to you.

  -  Getting off-topic or unrelated sites to link to you.

  -  Submitting your site to free-for-all (FFA) sites.

  -  Sending out identical emails to hundreds of sites asking for a reciprocal link.

  -  Applying to sites that have hundreds of links on the same page.

  -  Applying to sites that have reciprocal links pages buried deep in their site.

  -  Setting up multiple sites on a single IP address and linking them together in the exact same way.

  -  Stay out of bad neighborhoods, these are domains that have sites which have been penalized or given low page ranks by Google.

  -  Applying to sites that have hundreds of links listed on a single page. If your site is not on the top ten, you're not bound to get anything from that site.

  -  Setting up ten sites on the same IP address and link them together exactly the same way. Do not copy what you've already done, create each of your site from scratch. And, whenever possible, set them up on several different hosting companies.

  -  Ignoring dead links on your site. You should always clean your link directories and keep them free of 404s and dead links.

  -  Soliciting links from sites that have nothing at all do do with your niche/business.

  -  Focusing on PageRank alone. There are many other methods for building link popularity.

Keeping Yourself On Track

As you may have already noticed, there are so many things you can do to build links on the Web, so much so that it can easily boggle the mind.  The following questions should help you keep you on the right track.

  -  Are the sites that link to you in the same field/niche as you are? In other words, is your site related to the sites that are linking to it?

  -  Are the sites that link to your site also linked to by others in the same field/theme/niche?

  -  Do you have “authorities” or experts in your subject area linking to your site?

  -  Are all your site's pages optimized for relevant keyword phrases and are they properly linked to each other?

If you answered yes to all these four questions, you're generally out of the woods. Congratulations!

You do not want to have backlinks that are not matched to your page or there may be unwanted traffic connected. You have to be careful not to get involved with backlink programs in the so called bad part of town. If you are linked to a shady site it can kill your SEO rankings. You cannot help who has linked to you but you will be penalized for who you link to.

Your webpage will benefit from more traffic due to backlinks. You want to ensure that the traffic is desired and relevant to what your site offers. If you can search out sites that have a high PR to link to your site it will raise your chances or being noticed as well as give your website more link popularity with the search engines.

What is a backlink?

Its basically your link on another site. Like I put your link on my site. That's a backlink.

Why are backlinks important?

1. Gives you some traffic.
2. Help increase the PR of your site

The quality backlinks!

Quality backlinks are the sites that link to you and have the same topic/subject as your site. And it has a high or a better PR than you.

How to build backlinks?

1. By asking the site owner to put your link up.
2. Commenting on blogs.
3. Posting on forums and having your link in the signature

That is true but the reason that came about is because all these expert SEO and that type of people that just did anything to make a dollar.  If people did things the way the system was built for then Google would not have mad such a big change this I am pretty sure of. So I hate to say it but most people did it to themselves.

Backlinks served me well back when I was just starting out. Fortunately it still works for me as of now and I think that this could work forever if done the right way.
