Help with parabots needed please
« on: October 03, 2010, 01:57:08 PM »
Can anyone help me with the auto responder parabots?

I know some members are using it and might have had the same problems.

I installed parabots successfully

All the admin facilities seem to work ok!
I can set up and use the form code
Tested it myself, I am added to my list OK
And the first message is sent out just perfect!

The problem is with follow-up messages (they do not come)

I thought the problem would be with the cron jobs
But after getting in touch with my server, they went into my account and checked them, they said that they were all working OK

But the cron job report says “Could not open input

My server said
“If the error is in your email report, i think that will not affect your cron job task. Or try to find answer from your script support.”

So, anyone had the same problem?

The only difference in the script with mine is instead of using “localhost”
I have to use 10.16.96.70

*** Important MySQL Details ***

There is one very IMPORTANT thing that you must know in order to connect to MySQL server from PHP scripts: do not use localhost as MySQL hostname!

Our MySQL Hostname Is: 10.16.96.70

So please replace 'localhost' to 10.16.96.70 on PHP scripts. It is very important.

So anyone have any idea whats wrong?

Crossing my fingers  :-[

Brian

Try this Brian ...

/usr/local/bin/php -q /server/path/to/autoresponder/crons/emailcap.php > /dev/null

or

/usr/bin/php -q /server/path/to/autoresponder/crons/emailcap.php > /dev/null

Or, run the same thing w/o the "> /dev/null" and it'll show its errors.

If the file is in your normal web space, you can even open it in a web browser to see what you get. It may give you an error message you can work with via one or both of those two methods.

Thanks Wayne

Mike I tried what you put and still get an error report, however when I use this

php -q /home3/fromlitt/public_html/list/crons/emailcap.php>/dev/null
The cron seems to run OK but I get no report at all ?? would have to wait an hour to see if I get the follow up email though.

my domain is fromlittleacorns.com  so the user is "fromlitt"

Brian,

The -q tells it to be quiet and not spit out the errors. In this case, it might be worth turning that off and setting the cron to run every 5 minutes just so you have a chance to debug it in a reasonable amount of time!

I went to fromlittleacorns.com/list/crons/emailcap.php and got no error.
I wonder if that triggered your emails...

Hi Brian,
Wayne went exactly as I would have so give that a go and see what the script spits out. You can change the /dev/null to an actual /path/to/a/file setting and have it create a specific file you can view in your browser.

Something like ... /home/username/public_html/cronoutput.txt would be viewable at http://www.yourdomain.com/cronoutput.txt

Sadly, I THINK it may just spit out  “Could not open input” which doesn't help a lot but you never know.

I've seen a lot of this type of situations lately and most have gone back to a server upgrade of PHP. My billing system died last week due to this. Sadly, I had no clue that there was a problem until I noticed the system wasn't processing the nightly tasks which are triggered by cron. This is why I mentioned the full path to php in my last reply. Most of the time this has fixed the problem but obviously that's not the case with yours.

I don't feel the mysql situation is the issue as accessing the way you're doing it should work fine with the only possible issue being a slightly slower access. Typically that's negligable so, again, I don't think that has anything to do with it.

Thanks Mike & Wayne

Tried all you said and still nowhere near getting the follow-up messages

I think I have the path for the cron jobs correct now, however….

When they were incorrect I got a email from the cron jobs to tell me, now
I don’t get any reports! Could this be because there is nothing to send? Meaning a follow –up.

I now think I have the email settings wrong somehow and of course if they are, then the crons have no job to do so no report sent. I would imagine I would only get a report if the cron job had completed a task.

The link below is to the installation instructions so if anyone spots something that might cause a problem if done wrong, then I would be interested to hear.

http://www.brianbinns.com/parabots/installation.html

I did delete all yesterday’s files and re-installed the script, don’t get me wrong, everything seems to work just fine, except for being able to get the follow-ups
So looking back on past threads about Parabots I see that some members have installed the script and reported that all was running well BUT did they get the follow-ups working for them? Again I would be interested to know if they did.

So is it my email configurations?
For mail server I put  mail.fromlittleacorns.com
I set up an email account called “bounce” as it says replace bounce@ yourdomain.com with the email address where you want all undeliverable messages to be sent to.  If this email box does not exist, you should create it first

In the control panel setting I put mail.fromlittleacorns.com for… Your smtp server

Sorry this post is so long but I thought I would try to let you know everything (and still probably left something out.

One last thing, I have the script installed with Roller Hosting and detail about mail is in the control panel, they are..
Home Directory /home3/fromlitt
Operating system Linux
Server Name tig
Path to sendmail /usr/sbin/sendmail
PHP version 5.2.11

Hope I have not sent you all to sleep
Cheers
Brian

Hi Brian,
Something did change so at least you're making progress even if it might not be exactly what you're looking for.

Not being fully familiar with the detailed workings of Parabots I went ahead and installed it so I could see how it worked.

I found a lot of issues with it and the code is encrypted so trying to fix the problems isn't an option. If you want 100% functionality, you might want to look at another script.

That said ... the follow-ups worked fine for me using a very quick and basic setup.

I made an assumption that I should clarify ... you do have a follow-up message in there, right? Sorry ... don't mean any offense but wanted to be sure.

What is the timing for that message? IF that timing setting criteria hasn't been met then the message will not go.

Going on your statement about "nothing to do ... wont send a message" triggered these questions because you might be on to something.

I have the first message sent out immediatley and it does go out.
The second message is set to go out 1 hour later (this is the one that does not go out)

Quick update

I just tried to send a test broadcast email out and got this in a pop-up

Not Found
The requested URL /ar/members/blank.html was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Apache/2.2.14 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.14 OpenSSL/0.9.8e-fips-rhel5 mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 PHP/5.2.11 Server at fromlittleacorns.com Port 80

The mind boggles
P.S there no blank.html file anyway?

Brian,

Is there a specific reason for parabots? As in, is there a specific feature you need or is it just what is available?

I'm trying to remember which self-hosted email tool I've used (there was only 1)...

Maybe it's time to shop for another solution...
