I have been a long time Paint Shop Pro user which, like Gimp, is reported to be able to handle PSD files.
My experience was that they do but limited. Many times it's the font used in the PSD that throws a curve but not all the time.
I really didn't want to lay down the cash for PS as it's pretty situational and I don't think I'd use it that much.
However, I did end up picking up a copy of PS Elements for less than $100 on eBay. This fills the gap and life is good now.
