T.O. Looks very interesting indeed. Thank you for sharing this information. I believe there are several around here who have indicated they were looking for something at low-cost or no cost. So perhaps they will find this. Karen

Hi TO, Thanks for letting everyone know about this ... as Karen mentioned it could be a good option for many on a restricted budget.
Also, I'll beg you to forgive me for what I'm about to bring up because it will appear I'm posting against you, which technically I am, but I want to be sure anyone going this way is well informed.
First allow me to say I know nothing of these folks so I AM NOT saying anything against them or T.O. ... I'm just bringing up something I have seen happen MANY MANY times and I want to be sure you have all the options available to make an informed decision.
Due to the fact that a big part of my business is an autoresponder service I get approached A LOT by folks who have been using a free service of some sort and when you combine those with the prospects who currently use one of the many paid AR services you'd have about 90% of those folks who contact me with pre-sales questions.
In the case of the folks using a free service the stories are many but basically break down to just a couple situations ...
1: The provider disappeared and I can't get to my list
2: I got one (or two) spam complaints and they shut me down ANNNNDDDD I can't get my list.
We all invest a huge amount of time and effort into building a list. Loss of that is devistating and can literally kill your business. PLEASE be aware of these situations and think hard about how you proceed.
If at all possible ALWAYS run your list from your own website where you'll have the option to back it up and save that backup to your computer. This is very critical at all times but especially when starting out. There are too many free scripts available to get your list started. You might not have all the bells and whistles but you can move it later after you're making a few dollars.
Free providers have no incentive to help you in any way. In the case of spam complaints (which can/will happen regardless of how careful you are) they must protect their server and other clients. This is also true of paid providers but at least a paid provider knows they will lose revenue so they will usually look at the issue a little closer and ensure it's a valid complaint.
Even though I offer all levels of AR services I target large volumes (50K subscribers or more) because most shared hosting accounts don't like lists over 25-50K mainly due to the server resources used during a mailing. Which brings me to the next point regarding free providers ... if multiple clients have large lists the power of the server is critical AND not cheap. Even if they allow you to run that large of a list you risk data corruption because the server will automatically cut your process if you exceed the set limit of resource utilization. This can screw up your database in a heartbeat. Of course this will be true of a shared hosting account as well but if you limit your list to 25K or less you'll probably be ok.
Once you have a list that big you should be making enough money to pay for a more robust system whether that is Aweber, Get Response, my service or a dedicated server. Each of these options will carry you to the next level without much problem. I do recommend a dedicated server or a service like mine because the other paid services have fairly strict limits on spam complaints and might kill your service which means you lost your list. We don't do that unless the evidence is obvious that a client has been spamming.
So there you have it ... the good the bad and the ugly!!!! I hope this info will help you make an informed decision of how to proceed with your list building needs.

Oh man, Mike.
Thank you for a really super post...your input is invaluable to me...and will probably be so for many others.
I do use a paid AR service...aweber. I was fortunate to have good guidance when I was ready for an autoresponder and that's why I chose that route.
I can understand why someone wants to go with free. Particularly, since that was my first consideration, too.
I especially appreciate all your reasons for going with a paid service, some of which I had not considered.
So for all this, you have my thanks.
Karen

Thanks Karen, On one hand I don't like making posts like this but feel the priority is that folks have the whole picture and can make a good choice for list management.

Hi, I had Aweber up until 3 months ago. I was made bankrupt. I didn't even use it. Anyway, I ahve improved slightly. I downloaded GWA to my Wordpress, but I couldn't get it to work so I deactivated it. In a post last week there was a gentleman, (Gary Ambrose) who has has own free AR. I signed up with him and so far...... However, I left a post at the FTP thread. Once I get some money I will probably go back to a paid AR, depending of course if this one is good. I take Mikes views on board with regards to a free account. As the saying goes "There's no such a thing as a free lunch"Anyway, I got a job, starting on Monday so I will be able to invest in my Marketing. Have a nice day. Donald

Glad to see you're moving forward with getting a list Donald. However anyone wants to do it is fine ... just be sure to backup your list often! At LEAST once a week ... daily is even better.

Don't go there. The banter has started already. Weeks of listening to Gordon and David.Doesn't matter who gets in anyway, won't make much of a difference. Wow

Hi Donald,
Best of luck in your new job and all other endeavors. Thanks for the perspective on paid/free autoresponders. I enjoyed reading your post and reading your blog. I think the overall look is very nice and clean. Very, very nice.
Again - best of luck. Remember, don't stand up too often and keep your head down so it doesn't get chopped off! -- Magicman

Hi, Thanks for the comments magicman, much appreciated. Since I posted yesterday about my job, things might have changed. The job is a friend of mine's friend. He wanted me to start today but when he said for me to go and hire a van and go to a depot, someone there will sort you out. I declined. I will have to speak to him today. I'm not taking responsibility of a hired van. We'll see what happens. Hopefully in the near future I will be sitting at my desk without any worries. Have a nice weekend y'all. Donald

Well, Donald, I was just going to post a congratulations on you new job. And then I see your final post that maybe it's not a go.
So I'll wait.
If this one doesn't pan out, surely something else will later.

Thanks Karen,
I am going to work after all. I'm meeting my new boss to hire a van. I even got a job for a friend. Must be busy with parcels, apparently desperate for drivers. I'll see how the first week goes.
If you don't hear from me for a while, I'll be flat out knackered.
Hope my IM doesn't slow down.
DONALD
