3 Wordpress Questions
« on: April 21, 2012, 05:09:16 PM »
1st Question:
I'm running a wordpress website with 2 sidebars and I was wondering whether there was an easy way to remove the sidebars on particular pages?
Basically, I want to remove the sidebars so I can produce a full width sales letter page/s

2nd Question:
In my wordpress site I want to create a link to another page that isn't shown in the navigation and I don't want the page to be crawled by search robots - how do I go about preventing robots from discovering the page while allowing humans to visit it?

3rd Question:
I want to provide thumbnail pictures of these full page sales letters (as described in Q1) and make those thumbnails hyperlinks to the corresponding page. If I use the 'print screen' ability of my computer; can I make those hyperlinked thumbnail images?

Cheers for the help

Val

Your first question (and somebody PLEASE correct me if I am wrong..) depending on your theme, on the page where you edit your post, at the very bottom right, you should have a drop down menu that would let you choose a full page width template for the page you are creating.

Alternately you can go here: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/full-width-page-creating-your-own-page-templates  for info from the wordpress site concerning creating a full page template for your theme is if doesn't have one as an option.

Your second question for the no index links, you can use a link format like this:

< a title="Article" href="xxxx://example.com/article" rel="nofollow" >Article Example< /a >  This tells search engines and other bots not to follow that link.
(of course, replace the xxxx with http )

For your third question, it appears you have this one figured out correctly.  Just crop to what you want for your thumbail and re-size it to what size you want the image to display, then use the small thumbnail as an image link.

Hope that helps! :)

Hey VP,

I really like JING for screen capture. It's really easy to use, will capture stills or you can make a video of screen shots and it's FREE.

Just google it - it's a free download (forget the paid version).- MM

Dom,

If you don't have a page template that works for your salesletters already in your theme, let me know. We'll work something out to get you sorted.

I use the plugin Wordpress SEO by Yoast and it has the ability to specify in the page/post edit panel whether to set that page as noindex. That's usually enough to keep it out of the search engine results, although they may crawl it and just not show it. Not sure what aspect you're wanting to avoid with keeping those pages human navigatible and not have the SEs return them.

I have the Pixlr Grabber add-on in Firefox that does a nice job of taking screen shots of web pages. Then upload it into your blog and let WP resize the image for you.

Oh, and I'm not ignoring your PM, just been crazy busy!

Yes depend  of your theme but in YOUTUBE  you can find good explanation "how to"  and create full width page template by yourself
Some themes have options to don't use widgets on diferent pages if it's your case you can usethat option and you will need  WP plugin "PHP EXECUTE" - not sure about the name but with that you can paste all your ready made content  like new page do not add in menu andafter follow the explanation you have.

Hi Val,

Depending upon the theme that you are using; some themes come with a full width template and generally you can use that one.
