Domain question for a new blog
« on: December 31, 2011, 07:52:10 PM »
My main site is a blog and wears my domain name.  I want to create a separate blog to sell products from, but I would like the domain name in it also for branding.

Would it better better to just buy a new domain, or could I use mine with the resell site in a sub folder?

Using widgets as an example product for illustration purposes--

Example:  hxxp://mydomain-widgets.com   versus  hxxp://xxx.mydomain.com/widgets  versus a sub-domain like //widgets.mydomain.com ? (using x's til I get my post count up..hehe)

The end result is a domain the would be branded and easier for a visitor to remember how to type into their address bar.

I could just make a page in WP and put the items there, but there should be quite a few pages in the end and I really don't want each one listed in the nav bar AND I don't think it

would give me the desired end result. I want the blog that sells products to appear as a separate entity.

I hope that is a bit clearer than mud.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Alan

If you want to sell something on your blog, then try to get a domain name with the product name in.
For instance say you are selling dog collers, then try to get www.dogcollers.com/or/co.uk/or/info
it will show up better in the search engines. If you still want to use your domain name then add the sub folder www.yourdomain.com/dogcollers.

But if you want to do well, then I would go for the first option.

Good luck

Thanks for your advice, Brian!

That is kind of what I had in mind since my webhost allows me add on domains. I guess I could see if I can get a domain like mydomainWidgets.com so it would still be branded, yet have it's own identity at the same time.

I guess if I use WP the name of the blog and slogan lines in the header could have the keywords for SEO....hmmm

There are two schools of thought and they do meet in the middle. One is in reference to SEO and the other is on Driving traffic. If you are going to brand a specific product and really put some time and money into it, having its own domain is the way to go. If after doing considerable research for keywords and you find that it is going to be a tough nut to crack to get organic searches, then use a sub-domain and just drive traffic. You can get very high page rank with just traffic alone. Look at Facebook..#2 on searches and they are a PR 9 Site with absolutely no SEO.

I test constantly and Google does not penalize you for the use of sub-domains like some may think. It depends on how your content is structured and how it relates to your main domain. We use sub-domains for our pre-launches and have been very successful. Funny, we sold a package today before the pre-launch. Wife was a happy camper!

If your main domain is your corporate identity, using sub-domains is very logical. Just incorporate into your content that the main domain is your parent identity.

Thank you for the great info Charles!

I have found while searching for domains, the perfect domain name that you may have in mind is most likely taken.  ;;:B

HOWEVER...if you have a domain that is connected to your main business, then you can use a sub-domain that contains the key words that would tie in to the search terms you want to be found with.  Example: If you had a site focusing on marketing styles and you wanted a blog on the topic "article marketing" you could set up a sub-domain like so:  article-marketing.mydomain.com.   I have done some research and digging around to find out about google's view on that type url.  From what I gather, they will see such a sub-domain as a valid URL and it actually contains the key words you seek (even if you choose hyphenated).    As far as relevancy, it would be up to the webmaster to create content and such to help build rank.

I have a couple sites I am tweaking and working with.  In a few months I should have some hard results.

Thanks again!
