MIDI - Pre-DAW - DAW Help, I need a clue!
« on: October 23, 2011, 04:59:07 AM »
I'm sickeningly lost, dare I say stupid, when it comes to this stuff.

I've tried various software demos from Sony, Magix, Finale, etc.
Plus, of course Audacity. They're all intimidating to say the least.
It certainly doesn't help that I can't read Music Notation & Music
Theory may as well be Music Klingon.

I have neither the time, nor the desire to become a recording engineer.
I simply need a highly abridged overview of what the heck all of these knobs
& sliders do, what all of this jargon means, which ones to concentrate on & what
can be overlooked to just get something very basic recorded & out the door.

Do I need to install some additional hardware? As far as I knew, I should have
a general purpose sound card built-in from the factory?? Is that not sufficient?
If not, please tell me it could be an external version so that I won't have
to crack the cover!

Current, stock setup:

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
AMD Athlon II X2 Dual-Core
NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE (that's graphics though isn't it??)
RealTek HD is all that's listed in the Device Manager under Controllers (Is this just a driver, or is this the sound card??)
6GB RAM

Isn't there some sort of software that has virtual instruments?
I know there's BIAB, sound loops & all that, but here again: clueless.
I'll settle for PreSchool 101 Let's Play Piano at this point.

If somebody's willing to hold my little hand here, point me toward a book
that makes sense, something, anything--I promise to be your friend for life.

Karen,

There were some good Audacity tutorials from one of the members a few months ago.

I just did a quick search.

This is the one I was thinking of

Hope it helps you.

Thanks Henley,

Ted's links are no longer working. Although the tutorials were
helpful to a degree, there are other details I still need help with.

One thing is: I'm going through a book "Home Recording for Beginners".
It looks to be a pretty good one for my needs. The thing is though, the
author is covering the material using XP OS. Windows 7 doesn't have
anything at all in the Device Properties Dialog for MIDI. I'm going through
some Microsoft forums to see what's up with that. Is that a hardware component
that's missing, or a driver?

From one of the posts I found there...

Quote
There are some limitations when it comes to MIDI in Windows 7. The ability to choose a different hardware or software MIDI synthesizer other than the default Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth has been removed from the user interface for audio configuration in Windows 7. In short Windows 7 doesn't have the Midi mapper like XP did.

What gives?? So, does this mean my computer is like acoustically crippled or something?
Is this why I get no sound when trying to record with these programs like Audacity?

On further reading I found that Microsoft declared MIDI output to be a "legacy" feature,
and wouldn't be supported in future versions of Windows beyond XP. Gee thanks MS!!!

Someone though brought up LoopBe1. Anyone familiar with this?
Is this like the crutches for all of these poor limping computers out there?

Getting off on a tangent here...

C'mon Bill. What's up pal? Do you really want to push everyone to a MAC? Or have you delegated such decisions to the Engineers?
PC's--We all know they're inferior in a lot of respects but hey, they're convenient & cheap & software compatibility's not been such a problem overall. True, Ozzie's enough to make anyone want to smash a radio into a wall, but that's no reason to punish the rest of us!
I understand Geek, truly I do. But I also know that logic & creative expression can co-exist harmoniously.

OK, done ranting.

From what you are saying here, Karen, I think I am pleased that I still run XP on my main computer.

I have Vista on the laptop, but I try to touch that as little as possible - I HATE vista.

Sorry, I don't have the Windows 7 expertise to help you there. Maybe someone else will come along and help out.

Just a thought ... If you PM Ted, he will get an email notification of the PM and might respond and help you.

Good idea, I sent him a PM. He hasn't been on since July though.
Hope he's still with us.

btw. I kept getting errors when trying to install LoopBe1, but I did  find a
virtual MIDI that installed just fine called loopMIDI: www.tobias-erichsen.de

Thanks again Henley,
