Bridge Collapse in Atlanta
« on: March 30, 2017, 07:52:48 PM »
Unbelievable.  A huge section of Interstate 85 in Atlanta has collapsed due to fire.  Pretty incredible.  What a nightmare for those that have to travel from the northern suburbs into Atlanta for work.  Glad I work at home and my family works close.  Will take MONTHS for this to get repaired.

Yeah, baby. Traffic anywhere near Atlanta is a nightmare anyway. I lived there and the traffic is simply unbelievable. They've been building highways for over the last 20 years and they just can't catch up to the growth - particularly in the northern and far northern suburbs.

One of my daughters there lives in "metro Atlanta" and she's only about a 1/2 hour from Athens, GA. But a good hour and a half (at least) from downtown ATL in midday traffic.

This will make a nightmare way, way worse. - MM

I went to college in Atlanta in the early to mid 90s it's an amazing place but traffic has always been an issue.  I remember the days of Freaknik when traffic anywhere near downtown was a nightmare!

Wow, that's crazy. Glad no one was hurt. I feel for the commuters though. What a nightmare!

Freaknik? I've been there during one of those. There is no traffic jam because nothing moves! Very entertaining event. -MM

The stories I could tell you!  :shocked2: :toothy12:  :wistle:  People would come from all over the US to have fun at Freaknik...met someone from the state of Washington during one of them!

Yep - Freaknik was crazy.  Not permitted after 2010.  Don't miss that mess.  :-)  Brought traffic in the Buckhead area to a standstill.  My husband and I tried to go to dinner one year and didn't realize it was Freaknik weekend.  Took us two hours to get back home.  Ugh!

They started to commercialize on it in the late 90s so it was no longer genuine to it's roots for me.
I had a ton of fun in the early 90s when I first went to college and it was so much fun...despite the craziness and the traffic.

I took 20 top sponsors of the Orlando Magic to ATL to see a hawks game. Saturday, I had them all on  a bus on Saturday to get a super-duper lunch at the Varsity. Didn't happen...but the show during a very, very long 1/2 mile total bus trip was worth leaving the hotel.- MM

I miss going to the Varsity.  My dorm at Georgia Tech was just across the overpass from the Varsity!

Kelly - Oh, that's so good. And when the counter servers ask that - you better know what you're ordering.

My former dufus of a son-in-law and I attended the gold medal USA basketball olympic game in ATL and when to the Varsity after the game. The lines were humongous. When we got to the counter and heard the magic question, dufus said, "Well, it's about time." (Oh no he dint!!!)

The counter lady said to him..."Just hold on one minute sweety," put up a closed sign at her place, walked away and never came back. We had to start at the end of another line.

I did security work at an office building in Buckhead during the Olympics.  I got a pin from these Irish guys when they won a medal.

Magicman - I hear that!  My husband (who is a native Atlantan) roared when he heard about your ex SIL. We know you don't do that to the workers. Many of them have been there for ages and have no problem putting people in their place.  :-)
